Westmoreland County Virginia
Northern Neck Attractions

Westmoreland County Virginia is your entry to the Northern Neck.

Rich in history, it has many attractions, including the Northern Neck Wine Trail, Westmoreland State Park, and numerous historical sites.

Its popularity as a resort area began years ago when transportation was difficult and slow.

People from Washington D.C. discovered Colonial Beach, Virginia—and traveled there by steamboat, to spend a week vacationing.

At that time, there was a beach, a boardwalk (later destroyed by a hurricane), grand hotels and vacation cottages.

Gambling on the boardwalk (which actually extended into Maryland waters) was a very popular activity. The destruction of the boardwalk by a hurricane, ended this activity for awhile.

Today, you can gamble once again, by going on a Riverboat cruise, on the Potomac River, from Colonial Beach.

And just like other parts of Westmoreland County VA, life is still laid back in Colonial Beach--transportation in the town of is mostly by golfcarts.
