Northern Neck Farmers Markets

Visit a Virginia farmers market while you’re here.

Northern Neck fresh produce markets have local fruits and vegetables and make shopping fun!

During the summer you can go to a farmers market every Saturday.

So, especially if you have never lived in the country, you need to go shopping in Virginia for fresh produce and goodies at one of our monthly fresh produce markets.

And you’ll have the fun of meeting the farmer who grew your food!

Shopping in Virginia for Fresh Produce

While anyone can go to the food store to get fresh fruits and vegetables, it’s much more fun to get your fresh produce from the source—the farmer.

And there are different ways to approach this. You can go to the farm where the food is grown, and you can purchase produce (or sometimes pick it yourself).

You can go to fruit and vegetable stands or trucks parked along the side of the road.

Or you can go to a farmers’ market.

Or, better yet, for the best shopping fun, try them all.

Northern Neck Farmers Markets

The Northern Neck communities that hold a farmer’s market, alternate weeks so that they don’t compete with each other. Each holds their farmers’ market on a different Saturday.

So, if you live here, you can go to a farmers market almost every Saturday—in a different town.

Here’s the schedule:

  • Heathsville Farmers Market - Northumberland County. This farmers market is held on the third Saturday of the month on the Tavern Green (behind the big white Northumberland courthouse) at Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., April through October. Because it’s such a lovely setting, this is one of my favorites.

  • Irvington Farmers Market - Lancaster County. You can go to this farmers market on the first Saturday of the month, from May through November. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market is held on the commons in the town of Irvington.

  • Kilmarnock Farmers Market - Lancaster County. This produce market is held at the corner of N. Main Street and Town Centre Drive. On the 4th Saturday of the month. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from May to October.

  • Westmoreland Berry Farm - Oak Grove. Since there are no farmers markets in Westmoreland County, I included the berry farm. They have other kinds of produce, as well, and you can go there daily, from May to December.

One of the perks for living on the Northern Neck is our farmers markets.

Almost every week, during the summer, you can attend a Virginia farmers market on the Neck. They’re fun, old timey events, and you’ll get to meet the actual farmer who grew your food!
