Local Activities and Events in Virginia
Northern Neck VA

There are many events on the Neck that are held during the summer months. These might be considered Virginia tourism events

In the Fall, the last big event of the year (and considered to be the crowning event of the summer season) is the Urbanna Oyster Festival. The festival draws thousands and most people make special efforts to make sure that they can attend.

Unknown to may tourists and summer visitors, the Northern Neck also has some winter events. Most noteworthy among these are the many oyster roasts. Some are held outdoors (even though it’s winter) and some are held indoors, complete with beer and live music!

Many local events on the Northern Neck have live music.

Here are some of the more popular local events:

  • Memorial Day Strawberry Festival - Held every year on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend by St. Stephen’s Church in Heathsville, the strawberry festival features great strawberry treats and handmade crafts made by craftsmen in the community. It draws a huge crowd, so get there early.

  • River Fest Tappahannock - or you may prefer "Rivahfest". Held in Tappahannock in the spring, it’s a Virginia community festival for all ages. You’ll find great food, games, live music, arts, crafts and antiques, for starters…

  • Urbanna Oyster Festival - Held in Urbanna, on the Middle Peninsula, this is one of the most popular Virginia festivals. The Oyster Festival has become an informal, wrapping up the end of the summer season, Must Attend Event!

  • Reedville Oyster Roast - One of the more popular oyster roasts, this one is held annually in November in Reedville, at the Fishermen's Museum...

  • Rappahannock River Waterfowl Festival - Held each year in March, this is a Chesapeake Bay tradition with lots of wildlife art and carvings and plenty of good food...

  • Northern Neck Oktoberfest - Celebrate the traditional Oktoberfest in Virginia, and enjoy waterfront scenery, beautiful fall weather, and authentic German foods and beer...

  • Virginia County Fairs - The Richmond County Fair is a way to get in touch with the rural life and country living. See displays of farm products and animals, crafts, competitions and, of course, sample some of the great food!

  • Christmas Boat Parade - A short day trip will take you to the Hampton Christmas Boat Parade. If you’ve never seen a Christmas boat parade, you need to go to this one—at least once!

  • Virginia Wine Festivals - Stay alert for wine festivals. Many of the wineries have special events from time to time.

  • Ingleside Vineyards - They probably hold more winery events than any other vineyard!

  • Kilmarnock Blue Crab Festival - Celebrating the blue crab with crafts, food, childrens' activities, and musical entertainment.

  • Big Rock Fishing Tournament - Want to try your hand at a little competition? Well, here’s your chance…

Of course, these Virginia events are just the tip of the iceberg. Make sure you check my Blog frequently, as I’ll let you know about upcoming Northern Neck events, as I learn about them.
