Northern Neck Bird Watching

Virginia birds vary from backyard song birds to huge birds of prey.

While backyard birding on the Northern Neck of Virginia, you will see Virginia coast birds, bald eagles, ospreys and, of course the state bird, the cardinal.

The birds in Virginia provide some of the best birdwatching found anywhere.

Nature lovers, from all over the world, come to the Northern Neck to hike our nature trails and to watch our wildlife.

And because many of the birds of prey and Virginia coast birds are so large, they are easy to see—even with the naked eye.

Common Birds on the Northern Neck

Whether you go on a nature hike, specifically to watch Virginia birds, or you just set up a bird feeder in your backyard, you will see birds on the Northern Neck of Virginia.

And, if you are a real bird watching enthusiast, the Northern Neck has an Audubon Society group that meets monthly. You can even get on their email list, so that, when a member spots an interesting bird, you will be notified.

Here are some of the more commonly seen birds on the Neck:

  • Great Blue Heron Flying - A large bluish bird that makes an interesting squawk. In fact, we sometimes hear that squawk—in the middle of the night. The native Indians of the area considered the Great Blue Heron to be a sign of good fortune.

  • Osprey Bird - Ospreys are almost as large as bald eagles, and they look very similar from a distance. On the Northern Neck, we see osprey birds during the warmer months.

  • Bald Eagle Facts - Bald eagles remain on the Northern Neck all year. They have a huge wing span of 6-8 feet. And you might be surprised to hear their high pitched squealing cackle.

  • Red Cardinal Bird - The cardinal is the state bird of Virginia. The males are especially beautiful with their vivid red feathers. Cardinals mate for life, and they live on the Northern Neck year-round. If you put out a bird feeder with cracked corn and sunflower seeds, cardinals will come.

  • Eastern Blue Bird - A sweet and friendly little bird, the Eastern Bluebird lives in Virginia all year. If you put out a bluebird box, you may very well attract a pair of bluebirds.

  • What Do Wild Turkeys Eat? - Wild turkeys are common on the Neck. In the summer you may see a turkey or two, but in the winter, you often see a flock of turkeys. Early in the morning, you can hear them gobbling to each other.

  • Canadian Geese Migration - In the spring and the fall, you can hear the honking of Canadian geese as they migrate north or south. They often land on our creeks and rivers to take a break, and a few are with us all year.

Mallard ducks and other duck species are often seen on the Northern Neck.
