Here in the Northern Neck, we’ve needed a way to exchange and sell things that we no longer need—for some time.

Of course we have a couple of local newspapers, but their classified sections are pretty short, with very few items for sale.

And many of us live on the waterfront—away from the roads where would-be buyers would see our yard sales.

So...what we need is an online garage sale.

Here are some hints to help you sell your item:

• Include a picture - Pictures help sell. Buyers want to see what the item looks like. You can include up to 4 pictures of your item.

• Give measurements and model numbers - This helps the buyer understand exactly what the item is and how big it is.

• Include the price - Some buyers won’t respond if they think the price is a moving target.

• Disclose any imperfections or problems - If you are honest, many people will still be interested. Don’t try to hide a problem.

• Include your phone number - but DO NOT include your address. This is for your safety.

• If you prefer to use an email address - USE THIS FORMAT: JoeSomebody(at)hotmail.com

  When you write to someone at an address like this, change (at) to "@": JoeSomebody@hotmail.com

  The reason for using this format is to prevent getting a lot of spam email. Much of the spam is done with software that can find an email address automatically.
