The District of Columbia has just passed an interesting law that may affect you if you live in northern Virginia. You may be wondering why a law, passed in D.C. could affect you if you live across the Potomac River in VA. The answer is RATS! D.C. passed a law, mostly because of the rat infestation at the Occupy D.C. site. The law is designed to appease the Humane Society of the U.S. and prohibits the killing of vermin caught in the District. Captured pests can be transported to another location (outside of D.C.) and released or they can be rehabilitated. Rats must be relocated at least 25 miles away, or they will return to their former location. And, of course, handlers are required by the new law, to include the whole rat family, together, so they will not be separated. As Ken Cuccinelli (Attorney General for Virginia) recently pointed out, the most likely target for relocation is, of course, northern Virginia. That’s just one more good reason why a home on the Northern Neck holds appeal. We’re far away from the Occupy D.C. crowd, and no one is going to bother to bring rats and mice to our neck of the woods!

Winter is the time for fresh Chesapeake oysters and local oyster roasts here on the Northern Neck of Virginia! And, on January 21, 2012 the Upper Lancaster volunteer fire department will be having an oyster and shrimp dinner. If you’re not an oyster lover, most roasts are not that exciting, but this one is different. You’ll be able to get shrimp, hot dogs and bean soup, as well as the usual yummy oysters. And your drinks and Golden Beverages are included. The dinner will be held at the Upper Lancaster Volunteer Fire Department at 5170 Mary Ball Road, Lively, VA. The doors will open at 3:30 and dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Our experience has been that arriving early is important, as you may have to wait in a long line to get in the door, if you come too late. Tickets are $30 each, and children under 12 are free. Tickets will not be sold at the door so you will have to purchase them before January 16. You can get tickets:
