What’s a Neck?
Virginia has 3 peninsulas that stick out into the Chesapeake Bay. They call these peninsulas, “necks”. And the peninsula that is the northernmost one—is the Northern Neck.The Neck, as the locals call it, has LOTS of water for fishing and boating. The Potomac River is on the north. The Rappahannock River is on the south. And the Chesapeake Bay is on the east. But that’s not all the water. There are creeks and tributaries of rivers everywhere. In fact, the abundance of waterfront is one of the reasons that there are so many beautiful waterfront homes here. They are more affordable on the Neck than on almost anywhere else on the Chesapeake Bay.

Counties on the Northern Neck VA
Officially, there are 4 counties on the Northern Neck of Virginia. Some people include King George County, but that is not normally included.
