History of Virginia Virginia Northern Neck History
The history of Virginia goes back beyond colonial times. Virginia history and Chesapeake Bay history include native Americans, the birthplaces of three presidents (President George Washington, President James Monroe and President James Madison), and the home of General Robert E Lee.
In addition, Chesapeake watermen and farmers are important to Virginia history. In time, steamboats became an important way to transport people and things--and they opened up the Northern Neck to progress and development. At one time in Northern Neck history, Reedville claims to have been the richest town in America--due to its menhaden industry.
