Stratford Hall

Stratford Hall Plantation was the birthplace of Robert E. Lee, and he lived there for the first 4 years of his life.

A bustling plantation, Stratford Hall was a town in and of itself. It included:

  • The Great House and its outbuildings - The house is H-shaped, with the original outbuildings on each of its four corners.

  • Working plantation - Active and complete with slaves and indentured servants, this was a true plantation.

  • Grist mill - Used to grind wheat and corn, the grist mill is still operating.

  • Farming - Tobacco and other crops were grown here.

  • Blacksmiths

  • Weavers and Tailors

  • Gardeners

  • Walking trails - for you to enjoy today.

The Cliffs at Stratford Hall

No trip to Stratford Hall Plantation would be complete without seeing The Miocene era Cliffs.

The Cliffs are special, because they are a geological phenomenon that is found in only three other locations in the world—the Los Angeles basin, Austria and Belgium.

The Cliffs are composed of compacted sea matter that dates back to the Miocene era. They stand 150 feet tall, and, through the years, people have discovered the remains of animals from that era.

One of the more interesting fossils that people have found is shark teeth.

In recent years, most of The Cliffs area has been closed to visitors (except for a small area that you can still access), because of rapid erosion.

In addition to the above, you can also visit some very nice gardens at Stratford Hall and there are some pleasant hiking trails, as well.

Learn about General Robert E Lee and his family and have a pleasant, laid back day while you enjoy this lovely plantation.
